As the new year began, CALE middle school students paused to reflect on what they were most proud of from the past year — growing new skills, building friendships, trying new hobbies, and stepping outside their comfort zones.

They then channeled those reflections into creative vision boards, brainstorming goals and presenting their ideas to classmates. It was more than an art project — it was an opportunity to think intentionally about who they are and who they’re becoming.

One student shared, “I liked that I was able to put all my favorite things together on my vision board. Mrs. Moe didn’t limit us, so I got to share my love of horses, wanting to be a vet, and all the things that make me - me!”

Middle school is a pivotal season. Students are discovering what matters most, developing habits that will carry them forward, and navigating the ever-changing social landscape of friendships.

At CALE, we are intentional about developing relationships rooted in compassion. When students feel truly seen, they gain the confidence to explore interests, take healthy risks, and grow in meaningful ways.

Mrs. Moe embodies this approach. She cares deeply about her students — not just their grades or test scores. From leading thoughtful discussions around inspirational books like Make Your Bed to creating engaging, reflective projects, she cultivates a classroom where growth is personal, purposeful, and even fun.

Because at CALE, we believe school isn’t just about academic progress — it’s about shaping confident, compassionate young people ready for what’s ahead.

Our CALE High School students recently participated in a clay workshop led by Columbia College Professor Bo Bedilion. During this hands-on experience, students learned about alebrijes — vibrant, imaginative creatures rooted in Mexican folk art — and then created their own original designs.

These meaningful opportunities don’t happen by accident. Dr. Sarah Hairston, Executive Director of CALE Higher Education, has been intentional about bringing rich, real-world learning experiences to our high school students, connecting them with experts and creative disciplines beyond the traditional classroom.
